From a presidential initiative to an industrial revolution — two decades of transforming Uganda's banana into world-class food products.

The Visionary Behind Tooke

It began in 2005 as the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID). Born from the visionary mind of Rev. Prof. Florence Isabirye Muranga — the world's leading expert on the East African highland green banana — and backed by the President of Uganda.

For over a decade, a dedicated team of biochemists and food scientists worked relentlessly to unlock the industrial potential of the matooke crop. In 2019, the initiative evolved into BIRDC — a dynamic, commercially focused company — and birthed the Tooke brand.

Future Innovation: Banana Fibre

BIRDC is strong on research and development. Beyond food products, our scientists are exploring the industrial potential of banana fibre — for paper, textiles, and craft products.

This represents the next frontier of the banana industrial revolution — ensuring that every part of the banana plant creates value for farmers and communities.
